Today we begin our search for volunteers who will join us in 2025.
We are very excited to begin gathering the team for next season. Our new programme includes three and four-week volunteer placements as well as longer placements for team leaders. Places are limited and allocations begin in the New Year, so if you would like to join us next summer, don’t delay!
Full details including placement descriptions, dates and application forms are now available here…
Preparations for our 2025 Trailteam programme have been going very well and we are just about to begin the search for volunteers who will join us in Thórsmörk and Goðaland next summer.
We have put together an exciting and ambitious programme for 2025. As well as returning to continue improvements and complete seasonal maintenance tasks on many of our familiar sites, we have included several new projects on more remote sections of the trail network. As always, we are looking for participants who have some experience of camping and hill walking, enjoy wilderness landscapes and are ready for a challenge.
Once again, we will be hosting a series of 3-week teams at our Langidalur volunteer basecamp. These placements do not require previous experience of trail work as all training is provided. In addition, this season we are also looking for volunteers who would like to join us for 4 weeks and get involved in team leadership and project delivery. These 4-week placements are an ideal role for returning volunteers who are looking for an additional challenge.
Next summer we will also be hosting a limited number of long-term volunteers. These 9-week placements include team leadership roles and organisational tasks and are quite challenging due to their length. The 9-week placements are suitable for participants who have experience of similar projects or have worked with us in Thórsmörk before.
Full details, dates and application forms will be published here next week. Applications for our 2025 volunteer placements will be open from December 15th until February 11th.
Applications for our Thórsmörk Trailteams will close next week as we are nearing the end of our search for international volunteers who will join us this summer. If you would like to apply, please do get in contact by February 11th.
No previous experience of trail construction work is necessary as practical training will be provided. We are looking for participants who have some experience of camping and hill walking, enjoy wilderness landscapes and are ready for a challenge. Iceland’s notoriously changeable weather means that our teams have to be well prepared with warm clothing, good waterproofs and sturdy tents. Due to the strenuous nature of our work, participants must be physically fit and as many of our work sites are in remote locations, we do a lot of hiking to get to them! Our team is chosen from applicants and there is no participation fee.
As we allocate our volunteer places and the teams start to fill up, we look towards the summer trail projects ahead of us.
Our work season in Thórsmörk and Godaland starts in the spring as the snow melts and the trails are revealed. We begin with a survey of the trail network to gather information and highlight sections that have been damaged over the winter. The full picture is only clear when the snow has gone and we can then put together a task list for our Trailteams who begin their work in June.
Late snow last April delayed the trail surveys a little but created excellent conditions for exploring the area (pictured here). We also added an Instagram reel that captures our adventures out on the snowy trails.
Our volunteer placement applications will remain open until February 11th. Details, dates and application forms can be found here.
We are reaching the final few weeks of applications for the 2024 Trailteams and places are filling up fast. It has been great to hear from many applicants from around the world and we are looking forward to meeting the teams in Thórsmörk this season.
Our teams are filling up quite quickly, so if you would like to join us on the trails in Thórsmörk and Goðaland this summer, don’t delay sending us your application. Placement information, dates and application forms.
We have added an Instagram reel to show what a day on the trails with our volunteers can look like. Here, our three-week team is spending an August day maintaining the trail leading to the Stangarháls view point. Follow the link below…
We have created this site to bring you news about our volunteer projects in Thórsmörk and Goðaland. As well as an outline of our summer programme, the site includes information for volunteers taking part and details about how to get involved. The Thórsmörk trail maintenance programme is coordinated by Land and Forest Iceland (Land og Skógur).
