Our long-range trailteams

When we arrived in Thórsmörk five years ago, our work focused on trial maintenance tasks close to the permanent camps at Langidalur and Básar. As these were completed, the teams moved into more remote areas which have the added challenge of hiking long distance with the tools and materials.
To reduce the amount of time hiking each day, a series of temporary wilderness camps has been established close to the worksites. The focus this season has been the Rjúpnafell area where teams stayed for 4-5 days and when necessary were resupplied with food and materials from Langidalur. As well as increasing the range of our operations, these projects are very popular with the teams as they provide an opportunity for our volunteers to experience low impact camping in Iceland’s wilderness.
