We would like to thank all our volunteers and Thórsmörk friends for another great year.
A Happy New Year to you all and very best wishes for 2020.
This summer, as well as the regular trail maintenance projects, our teams have also been involved in tree planting for the first time. In July our volunteers joined staff at the nearby Tumastaðir Forestry Station to help plant 1800 poplars.
It is a small beginning for us, be we hope to return during the next weeks and continue the work. This season our teams have also been involved in series of revegetation projects on damaged areas within Thórsmörk and Goðaland using native willow.
Tree planting in Iceland is now gathering pace inline with the country’s climate strategy which includes carbon sequestration through afforestation and revegetation. Our teams have been excited to get involved and we hope to make these planting days a permanent feature within our volunteer programme.
A big thank you to our colleagues at Tumastaðir for hosting the groups. We look forward to our next visit and continuing the work.
This year, summer has arrived early in Thórsmörk and the good weather has helped us get ahead with preparations for our main volunteer projects which will start in June.
Our first team of the season joined us for 2 weeks in May and included experienced volunteers from the United Kingdom, USA and Canada. As well as setting up the Langidalur volunteer camp in preparation for the summer, the team focused on GIS data collection, trail surveys and maintenance on several of the main routes.
It has been a really great start… the sun is shining and now we are ready.
We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who worked with us and supported our teams in 2017.
A very happy New Year to you all!
Very best Christmas wishes to you all!
