Thank you team!

After 6-months of practical projects, our season came to an end in the middle of October. The equipment is packed, the orange waterproofs washed and the camps have been handed over to the mice as we take our winter break from Thórsmörk.

We would like thank everyone who volunteered with us and made 2018 a really great season. Despite the changeable weather and large amounts of long-distance timber carrying, our teams were ready for every challenge. Together we completed more than 250 weeks of trail maintenance work and practical conservation tasks throughout the area.

We will take a short break in November before preparations for next season begin. Programme details and application forms for 2019 will be available here on December 15th.

‘Hiking week’ on Laugavegurinn

The volunteer camps have been very quiet this week as our teams have been away hiking on Laugavegurinn.

Each summer our 6-week volunteers have the chance to hike from Landmannalaugar during their ‘hiking week’ as a small reward for all their hard work. As well as a welcome break from the challenges of trail building, the hike is an opportunity to explore and enjoy the area (without carrying trail tools and timber).

We would like to say a huge thank you to Ferðafélag Íslands for their support with these trips. Also, special thanks to all the amazing hut wardens who have helped us along the way.

Back on the trails…

Our first volunteers have been busy this week preparing the camp at Langidalur and surveying the trails to assess winter damage. In between the snow and rain showers, we have been gathering GPS data and making new trail markers.

The weather conditions have been challenging, but the work has gone very well. A big thank you to our friends at Ferðafélag Íslands for providing accommodation through these wet and stormy nights.

The volunteer camp at Langidalur is now ready… we are just waiting for the sunshine.

Ready for the summer…

Since our arrival in Thórsmörk about a week ago, preparations at Langidalur have been going well and the volunteer camp is now ready for the summer. As well as  improvements to the facilities there, our main task has been preparing equipment and supplies for the groups.

As most of the snow has now gone from the area, we have begun checking the trails for damage, lookin at new projects and putting together a work plan for the season. As always, there is plenty to do and in the first weeks we will focus on maintenance and improvements to trail marking and signs.

We very much look forward to the arrival of our first volunteers on May 13th and the summer adventures ahead.
