July in Thórsmörk

Summer in Thórsmörk is passing by very quickly and today our second Wilderness Management team has set of on its hiking week. The group will arrive in Landmannalaugar today and will then be hiking back to Thórsmörk during the next week. This gives us plenty of time to organise all the exciting work projects we want to do with them in the second half of August.

The weather during the last month has been much kinder to us than earlier in the summer and we have been uploading pictures from our July adventures…

There are now 2 sets of photos of our teams on Flickr…

The team heads home…

Our first long-term volunteer team completed their project and headed home on Saturday. A total of ten volunteers and team leaders left us over the weekend and we miss them very much.

We would like to thank everyone for their excellent work and all the adventures we have had together during the last weeks. We hope you had fun and that some of you will join in our work (online) this winter or join us in the forest again next season. With over 100 weeks of volunteer work completed, you really have left your mark on Thórsmörk and Goðaland.

It is not over yet though… We are delighted to welcome our new team of 8 long-term volunteers which has arrived and now begun a week of induction and training at Langidalur (with a day hike together today). I am sure we have many adventures ahead of us this summer!

June in Thórsmörk

We have now completed the first month with volunteer groups at the new base camp at Langidalur.

June was quite a challenge month for the team as we had many days of rain and some stormy nights on the campsite that really tested the equipment.  There have been a few damaged tents and a few sleepless nights but the teams have coped very well. Together we completed more trail work in the last month than we did in the whole of last season.

Our Wilderness Management team has reached the middle of there placements and are away now hiking Laugurvegurinn (from Landmannalaugar to Thórsmörk). We look forward to hearing about their adventures when our teams gather together again at the base camp this weekend.
