Our tree planting Trailteam

Last season we introduced tree planting into our volunteer programme for the first time. Although this is quite different to the regular work of the trailteams, everyone was very eager to get involved. Taking a break from the Thórsmörk trails, the teams travelled to the Forestry Stations at Tumastaðir and Þjórsárdalur where our colleagues organised and guided the work.

Various tree species were planted (depending on the location) and these included both native birch as well as fast-growing poplar. During a series of projects with the foresters, our teams planted more than 5000 trees.

With this successful start we plan to continue and plant many more trees in 2020.

Full details about our 2020 volunteer programme, including placement dates and application forms will be published here on December 15th.

Application deadline approaching

We have now reached the final week of volunteer applications for 2019.
If you would like to join us in Thórsmörk this summer, please get in touch before January 31st

No previous experience of trail construction work is necessary as practical training will be provided. We are looking for participants who have some experience of camping and hill walking, enjoy wilderness landscapes and are ready for a challenge. Iceland’s notoriously changeable weather means that our teams have to be well prepared with warm clothing, good waterproofs and sturdy tents. Due to the strenuous nature of our work, participants must be physically fit and as many of our work sites are in remote locations, we do a lot of hiking to get to them!

Full details including placement dates and application forms can be found on our homepage…

A short film from Thórsmörk

On a cold and rainy January afternoon we needed a little reminder of Icelandic summer.

This short film was made by Johnny Rolt and Ollie Campbell when they joined us 2017. It is a really beautiful film and it captures life at the volunteer camps and our work projects in Thórsmörk, Goðaland and along the Laugavegurinn trail. For anyone joining us for the first time this season, the film gives a good idea of what to expect from our volunteer placements.

We wanted to share this amazing film once again.
Sit back and enjoy a few minutes of summer…

Preparing for the summer… Volunteer places available

We have received a record number of applications for our programme this season and our first week back at work has been busy with reading applications and completing Skype interviews. We are delighted that there has been so much interest in the programme and it has been really nice to hear from so many people who would like to join us for a second (or third) time.

We have now started to allocate places so although we will keep the applications open until the end of the month, don’t delay getting in contact if you would like to join us this season. No previous experience of trail construction work is necessary as practical training will be provided. We are looking for participants who have some experience of camping and hill walking, enjoy wilderness landscapes and are ready for a challenge.
