Last summer in pictures…

We have collected together some of our favorite pictures from last season and published them in an album on Pinterest; 2016 Thórmörk Trail Volunteers.

Thank you to our volunteers and friends…

We would like to thank everyone who worked with us and supported us through another great season in Thórsmörk. We hope that you have good memories of your days on the trails, and that you enjoyed your time with us.

It was a summer filled with drain building, digging through rock, long hikes with equipment and the endless carrying of timber to distant work sites… as well as those highland adventures, the great meals we shared and the many evenings we spent around the campfire.

A huge amount was achieved this season and the results speak for themselves. We really feel very lucky to have worked with such great teams – Thank you all!

Our season officially ends today and we will take a short break before recruitment for 2017 begins. Project information, placement details and application forms will be published here on December 15th and we will start the search for our new team…

Student “conservation days” in Thórsmörk this summer…

International school hiking groups are a familiar site in Thórsmörk during the summer months, as they complete the Laugavegurinn hiking trail. This season, groups from the organisation World Challenge will be stopping-off to join our volunteer teams in Langidalur for a series of nature conservation days.

These groups are a welcome boost to our planned summer activities. The aim of these days is to include visiting school groups in environmental protection work in the area and to introduce them to practical conservation tasks. Projects will be guided by Forest Service (Skógrækt ríkisins) staff and volunteer team leaders who will work alongside the groups.

As well as hands-on work, the groups will learn about nature conservation in Iceland, explore the area and experience life at our volunteer base camp. This season, the teams will focus on erosion control work as well as the on going trail maintenance tasks. The activities will give participants an insight into the management of nature conservation areas in Iceland.

We are very excited about this new partnership and very much look forward to working with the World Challenge teams this summer.

Volunteer application update… Places filling fast!

Thank you to everyone who has been in contact about placements with us in Thórsmörk next season.

Here at Trailteam headquarters, we are now busy working through all the applications that have reached us in the last few days. It is a difficult task, and in order to talk to as many people as possible we have added two extra days to the first round of interviews, so that they will now cover 29th and 30th December as well as the planned 2nd January.

With so many applications arriving each day, we recommend that if you are thinking of joining us – don’t delay sending your application. The closing date for all applications is January 31st but we will begin allocating places on January 2nd.

Best Christmas wishes to all!
