Final call for volunteers for our 2025 Trailteams!

Applications for our Thórsmörk Trailteams will close this week as we are nearing the end of our search for international volunteers who will join us this summer. If you would like to apply, please do get in contact by February 11th.

We are looking for participants who have some experience of camping and hill walking, enjoy wilderness landscapes and are ready for a challenge. Iceland’s notoriously changeable weather means that our teams have to be well prepared with warm clothing, good waterproofs and sturdy tents. Due to the strenuous nature of our work, participants must be physically fit and as many of our work sites are in remote locations, we do a lot of hiking to get to them!
Our team is chosen from applicants and there is no participation fee.

Full details about the placements including dates and application forms can be found on our website…

Applications for 2025 will close at the end of Tuesday, February 11th and the remaining placements will be confirmed by the end of the month.

Our Trailteams in 2025

Preparations for our return to Thórsmörk and Goðaland are now well underway and as always, gathering the teams is the highlight of our winter work. January has been a busy month of applications and interviews and we have enjoyed meeting many new volunteers as well as catching up with old friends who are planning to join us again.

As always, we have put together an ambitious summer programme and we are very much looking forward to returning to the trails and the season ahead. Trail survey work begins in March and our first international volunteers will join us at the Langidalur camp in May.

It is not too late to join us this summer but don’t delay. Applications will close on February 11th.

Our work in 2025…

We have now started to gather together our summer Trailteams and once again we are delighted with the response to our call for volunteers. As we talk to applicants, we are very often asked for details about the trail maintenance and nature conservation tasks that are planned and exactly what type of work our volunteers might find themselves doing this summer.

With that in mind, we have collected a set of pictures to show our plans for the season and highlight the main tasks that we will be doing. Although we will be returning to several of our favourite sites, the 2025 programme will continue our focus on more remote areas as well. Some of these work areas are more than an hour’s hike from our volunteer base camp at Langidalur.

The final decision about our work tasks is dependant on weather conditions but we aim to mix and vary the work tasks and project locations for each team. Here are some examples of the techniques we use and the main tasks that we are planning for 2025…

Applications for the summer teams are now open. If you would like to join us, don’t delay!

Looking back at 2024… Pictures from our adventures last summer

As the year draws to an end, we look back at the summer with our Trailteams in Thórsmörk.

We have collected some of our favourite pictures that were taken by our volunteers. They show our amazing teams out working and exploring the trails, and capture everyday life at the volunteer camps. They bring back many great memories of the summer and our time together in Thórsmörk.

We have now begun to gather the teams for next season.

Returning to Thórsmörk in 2025

Preparations for our 2025 Trailteam programme have been going very well and we are just about to begin the search for volunteers who will join us in Thórsmörk and Goðaland next summer.

We have put together an exciting and ambitious programme for 2025. As well as returning to continue improvements and complete seasonal maintenance tasks on many of our familiar sites, we have included several new projects on more remote sections of the trail network. As always, we are looking for participants who have some experience of camping and hill walking, enjoy wilderness landscapes and are ready for a challenge.

Once again, we will be hosting a series of 3-week teams at our Langidalur volunteer basecamp. These placements do not require previous experience of trail work as all training is provided. In addition, this season we are also looking for volunteers who would like to join us for 4 weeks and get involved in team leadership and project delivery. These 4-week placements are an ideal role for returning volunteers who are looking for an additional challenge.

Next summer we will also be hosting a limited number of long-term volunteers. These 9-week placements include team leadership roles and organisational tasks and are quite challenging due to their length. The 9-week placements are suitable for participants who have experience of similar projects or have worked with us in Thórsmörk before.

Full details, dates and application forms will be published here next week. Applications for our 2025 volunteer placements will be open from December 15th until February 11th.
