Planning for summer

As we allocate our volunteer places and the teams start to fill up, we look towards the summer trail projects ahead of us.

Our work season in Thórsmörk and Godaland starts in the spring as the snow melts and the trails are revealed. We begin with a survey of the trail network to gather information and highlight sections that have been damaged over the winter. The full picture is only clear when the snow has gone and we can then put together a task list for our Trailteams who begin their work in June.

Late snow last April delayed the trail surveys a little but created excellent conditions for exploring the area (pictured here). We also added an Instagram reel that captures our adventures out on the snowy trails.

Our volunteer placement applications will remain open until February 11th. Details, dates and application forms can be found here.

A day on the trails

We are reaching the final few weeks of applications for the 2024 Trailteams and places are filling up fast. It has been great to hear from many applicants from around the world and we are looking forward to meeting the teams in Thórsmörk this season.

Our teams are filling up quite quickly, so if you would like to join us on the trails in Thórsmörk and Goðaland this summer, don’t delay sending us your application. Placement information, dates and application forms.

We have added an Instagram reel to show what a day on the trails with our volunteers can look like. Here, our three-week team is spending an August day maintaining the trail leading to the Stangarháls view point. Follow the link below…

Land and Forest Iceland (Land og Skógur)

The New Year brings some exciting changes to our organisation. From January 1st, Iceland’s Forest Service (Skógræktin) and Soil Conservation Service (Landgræðslan) have been combined to form a new state agency that is called “Land and Forest Iceland” (Land og Skógur).

The work of the Trailteam.is programme will continue in the new institution and we look forward to returning to Thórsmörk and Goðaland in the spring to begin our 12th season.

Looking back at 2023… Pictures from our summer adventures

As the year draws to an end, we look back at our summer with the Trailteams in Thórsmörk.

We have gathered together some of our favourite pictures that were taken by the volunteers, showing our work and capturing everyday life on the programme. Many great memories of our time together last season…  2023 Volunteer Gallery.

Placement applications for 2024 are now open and full details including dates and application forms can be found here.

Gleðileg jól – Happy Christmas!

We would like to thank all our volunteers and Thórsmörk friends for another great year.

Merry Christmas to you all, and best wishes for a Happy New Year!
