New Trailteam project… 15/08/21-04/09/21 (3 weeks)

Our campfire at Langidalur (Ellen Halldorson)

Since our arrival in April, we have been busy with a variety of trail construction and landscape restoration tasks. Despite ongoing travel restrictions, many of our volunteers have been able to join us and all of the planned projects have gone ahead. These include improvements and marking on our new network of bike trails, a large revegetation project close to Kattarhryggur and new timber frame steps on the west side of Valahnúkur.

Following on from this successful start, we would like to increase our teams and have now added a new 3-week volunteer project to our 2021 programme and last minute places are available.

The ongoing work includes trail maintenance tasks throughout Thórsmörk and Goðaland. In August the tasks will include wooden step construction, repairing damaged trail sections, and GPS data collection work. Tasks as ever, are dependant on weather conditions. Further deatils about our programme can be found in the Volunteer Guide.

As this project reaches into September, participants should be prepared for autumn conditions which include possible rain and cold night temperatures. This means that the team will require good quality waterproof clothing, a sturdy tent and a 4-season sleeping bag (see general kit list for further details).

Bus transport from Reykjavik and return will be provided.

As the nights get darker there will be the possibility of northern lights.  The forests will change through their autumn colours.

Participants should be aware of the ongoing travel restrictions for visitors to Iceland. These currently include a 5-day arrival quarantine for non-vaccinated EU citizens. Third country citizens (non-EU, which now includes UK) require vaccination to travel to Iceland. Full details and exemptions can be found on the website.
